Simply Mahj Hosts an Unforgettable Mahjong Event in Katy — Featuring “My Wife Plays Mahjong”
Katy knows how to bring people together,
and Simply Mahj proved it again with a lively mahjong celebration that drew players from all over the area — full of laughter, strategy, and community.
Between a spirited round-robin, beautiful tile sets at every table, and a special appearance by content creator “My Wife Plays Mahjong,” it was the kind of day that shows exactly why everyone’s falling in love with the game.
A Day of Tiles and Friendly Competition
The room buzzed with energy — tables packed with smiling players, gorgeous mahjong mats and racks, and prize trophies on display for the round-robin winners. The “My Wife Plays Mahjong” creator took the mic to share his own journey into the game, adding a fun, heartfelt touch to the day and reminding everyone that mahjong really is for everyone.
For the unfamiliar, mahjong is a four-player tile game with Chinese roots dating back to the 1800s. Often compared to rummy, players draw and discard tiles to build winning hands. It’s part strategy, part luck, and entirely social — and that social spark was on full display all day long.
Spotlight: Deborahlee Trevino Nieves
One local powerhouse stood out: Deborahlee Trevino Nieves, founder of the Copperfield Mahjong Community (which she started on the Partiful app). She played a full day and even placed in the competition.
She was so locked in on her strategy that she actually busted her platform mid-game. Talk about dedication! Her wonderful husband came to the rescue and brought her a brand-new pair so she could keep right on playing. Now that’s commitment to the game — and a pretty great partner, too.
A Warm Welcome from Kiara Thompson
We were also greeted by the warm and welcoming Kiara Thompson, owner of mastered.mahj on TikTok. Faces like hers are exactly what make this community feel so easy to step into, whether you’re a seasoned player or picking up your very first tile.
We have such a wonderful group of ladies in this community — and days like this are what keep everyone coming back.
